Pencil Sketching and Drawing – The Basics

Pencil sketching and drawing made by a skilled artist can make a big impression as he can bring out even the finer details in his sketching and drawing so that it looks very much similar to a photograph in black and white. First we should understand that it is not complicated when it comes to making pencil sketches. It also involves very less tools (just paper and pencil). There are no complications like mixing colors, time for drying and other types of complications like when using paints. But for making an impressive pencil sketching and drawing, the artist should have mastered the pencil and should be good at observation skills.

A good pencil artist would know that various pencil blends levels could be attained using various types of pencils. The blending effects that are achieved are dependent on the skills of the artists that there is no limitation to it. There are nearly seven pencil sketching and drawing techniques which can be applied in practical use. One of the famous techniques is known as the cross hatching or hatching technique. This technique is nothing but shading the drawing using lines. Caressing technique is also another famous technique. This can be achieved by using a finger or paper stump to make smooth blends. Just by using the above two techniques in combination one can easily achieve the desired effects eloquently captured on paper.

Observational skills can make an artist distinct from others as various artists perceive and observe things around them in a different manner. They might also have distinct thoughts and concepts about things they view and even might come up with various interpretations depending on their previous experiences. Certain artists select to sketch and draw objects or things that are closer to real life but certain artists select to express their views through their drawings and sketches. Depending on the importance and emphasis laid by the artists, the end result is different.

It should also be kept in mind that the basics of sketching and drawing always would remain the same. Monochrome drawing lays the basic foundation for future great drawings and also helps the artists to move on with oil pastels, color pens, acrylic painting, oil painting and water color painting. But the progression of the artist remains limited if he does not possess visual effects skills. Perspective and composition of the artist makes the sketching and drawing complete.
